Since their foundation in 1982, the Fonds Régionaux d’Art Contemporain (Regional Contemporary Art Collections), have proven to be vital, unprecedented instruments of cultural planning for the regions. They were set up to create a contemporary patrimony1, to circulate it and to raise public awareness. A regional contemporary art collection is, therefore, one that is in its region. This is not to say that the collection is from the region in question, but that it should interpolate in proximity with and in its territory. The original utopian idea was to create a collection that interacts so closely with these places that the region would be continually renewed. In other words, a tool for constant creative interaction between the region, the art- ists and the works; an attitude of mind without walls or rhizomes; a new model based on the idea of the “movable collection”, capable of radically accelerating the decentralization process by abolishing the very idea of a center.
