Algiers, Archipelago Of Freedoms

The exhibition Algiers, Archipelago of Liberties builds a bridge between several revolutionary periods that the African continent has experienced and is still experiencing. It brings together some fifteen artists whose reflections draw on memories of African struggles, as well as recounting iconic and little-known revolutionary trajectories, and creating intimate and collective narratives, both historical and fictional. Its point of departure is Algiers, and more generally Algeria, which has seen two periods in its history synonymous with the desire for the emancipation of peoples: the post-colonial period around the 1970s, when several revolutionary movements from Africa, in Europe and America, were invited to Algiers, and more recently, in 2019, when an unexpected national revolt took place, commonly known as "the smile revolution" because of its pacifist nature.
