An Instant Before The World

The catalogue for the Rabat Contemporary Art Biennial - the first all-female contemporary art biennial - from 24 September to 18 December 2019.

 

"That instant before the big bang

That instant before the first cry

That instant before our eyes opened

This moment before naming

This moment before we leave

This moment just before clarity

 

It is at this moment that artists, architects, choreographers and creators travel. They set off for this place without space, a place made up of an instant. They take up residence there, create the conditions for a precarious life, and when it disappears return with euphoria, sometimes melancholy, but never with sadness, only with a memory: a work of art.

The first Rabat Biennial is an attempt, perhaps an impossible one, to travel to that moment. The destination is unknown, the path uncertain; yet we will have to long for these places of beginnings and give ourselves fully to wandering if we hope to get there".
